Brian Kimmel (Bk) is a Dharma teacher (dharmācārya) in the Plum Village tradition. He received the Lamp Transmission as a teacher from Thích Nhat Hanh in 2021. The last cohort to do so before Nhat Hanh’s death in 2022. Bk’s teaching is rooted in the framework of “Embodying Narratives”—weaving together the insights of Engaged Buddhism, somatic trauma healing, and social justice. Brian offers Days of Mindfulness, retreats, and pilgrimages that invite practitioners to touch the earth of their own lives, transforming personal and collective suffering into a source of compassionate action.
Bk practices primarily with his hometown, Seattle-based sangha, Mindfulness Community of Puget Sound. He was first introduced to the teachings of Thich Nhat Hanh in the mid-1990s by a community college classmate and Yoga teacher while in his teens. He met Thich Nhat Hanh in person in Santa Barbara in 1999 when he was ordained as Nhat Hanh’s student. He has traveled globally with the Plum Village Sangha including Thich Nhat Hanh on teaching tours in North America, France, Vietnam and most noteably, Indonesia when he was the first of his family to return to their ancestral lands in fifty years since their exhile.
With a background in language studies including Sanskirt, Pali, and Indonesian, Bk brings a depth of knowledge and experience to his practice, study, and transmission of the Dharma.
